We are committed to providing open access to our holdings, as far as possible within the limits of privacy and confidentiality. However, individual collections and items may be restricted due to federal/state regulations, University policy, individual donor wishes, the condition of the material or unprocessed status.
Access to the academic records of living individuals is protected under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). The Archives reserves the right to refuse access to collections that are known to contain information restricted by FERPA.
Oakland University Archives and Special Collections adheres to the Code of Ethics for Archivists of the Society of American Archivists and has policies and procedures to protect the interests of the donors, individuals, groups, and institutions whose public and private lives and activities are documented in its collections. It respects all users’ rights to privacy by maintaining the confidentiality of their research and protecting any personal information collected about them in accordance with the privacy policy of the OU Libraries.
