Biographical note

Sandra Packard was the first woman to serve as Oakland University’s president from 1992 to 1995. Before coming to OU she was provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as well as professor of curriculum and instruction for seven years. She held an Ed.D. in Art Education with a concentration in educational psychology from Indiana University. As President she addressed declining financial resources and helped increase enrollment. She created a student liaison position to the Board of Trustees and started the planning for a new recreation and athletics center, obtaining a 29 million dollar allocation from the state of Michigan for that purpose.

After her presidency, Packard remained at OU as director of the Higher Education program and a professor of education.

Scope and Contents note

The President Sandra Packard collection covers her work during 1992-1994, part of her tenure at Oakland University. The collection was assembled from files originating in the president's office and other sources. Of particular note are the events files, which contain President Packard's speeches, and the memos and correspondence files. Materials from her inauguration, including recordings, are also present. Newspaper clippings files document Sandra Packard's career while president as well as afterwards.
