An italic label indicating a part of speech follows the main entry. The eight traditional parts of speech are indicated as follows:

Language Abbreviations
The matter in square brackets preceding the definition is the etymology. Meanings given in Roman type within these brackets are not definitions of the entry, but are meanings of Middle English, Old English, or non-English words within the brackets. The abbreviations for these languages follow:
