In 1973 B.S. degrees in medical technology, environmental health technology, and medical physics were approved by the Trustees after a Study Committee on Health Sciences Professions issued a comprehensive recommendation with regard to health-related program development at Oakland University.
Originally, these programs were housed in the College of Arts and Sciences but the Center for Health Sciences was established in 1976 by the Board of Trustees upon recommendation of the Senate. Its original philosophy was to provide a comprehensive health and medical education center.
Health programs grew quickly at Oakland under the leadership of the Center’s Associate Provost, Moon Jae Pak. In 1980, a committee investigated the possible creation of a medical school. In June 1985, in view of these developments, the Center was turned into a School of Health Sciences. A new Master of Science in exercise science was opened followed in 2001 by the first doctoral program in Physical Therapy.
The School of Health Sciences collection is a composite collection of materials that have been transferred to Archives over time from the School or found in other collections in the archives. It contains studies conducted in the 1970s and the 1980s to investigate the need for health professions education in the Oakland University area and to develop a new school. It also includes numerous program proposals, administrative files (constitutions, assembly minutes) and publications (brochures, the Healthy Spirit newsletter).
Additional information on the School of Health Sciences is available in the Presidents and Provosts papers.
