Biographical note
Louis Esposito was appointed vice-president for academic affairs and provost in March 1999 and was awarded tenure as professor of economics at the same time. He joined Oakland University after serving as provost at the University of Massachusetts, Boston in 1994-1997. His research was in the field of industrial organization, antitrust policy, and government regulation. He also served as a consultant to the Office of Research and Statistics of the Social Security Administration. He served as Provost under President Russi until May 2001, when he joined the ranks of the faculty again. His termination triggered protest among the faculty. During his term he worked to formulate a new enrollment plan that would help the university manage the dramatic growth of the student body, investigated the possibility of an institute for teaching and learning, and reorganized the academic units.
