Biography

John Cameron worked as a professor of Art History at Oakland University from 1964 to 2007. He also served as chair of the Art and Art History Department from 1978 to 1987. He taught courses on Michigan architecture, Medieval art, modern architecture, and many more. Through a state of Michigan grant he and students researched all pre-World War II structures and monuments in selected communities in Michigan, to be added to the state inventory. Through his prolific career he researched a variety of topics that reflected his personal curiosity and his commitment to Oakland University: Meadow Brook Hall, modern architecture, 19th century French photography (especially the glass stereographs of Ferrier and Soulier).

Scope and Contents note

The John Cameron papers consist mostly of research files accumulated by Cameron on Meadow Brook Hall during his career at Oakland University. In his notebooks, Cameron compiled all the materials he gathered during in his research on Meadow Brook Hall for a 1979 exhibit at the Meadow Brook Art Gallery at Oakland University. They contain photocopies of scholarly articles and of Meadow Brook Hall archival materials, personal notes, which document the home and its interior decoration as well as other comparable stately homes in the U.S. and England. The personal files contain other miscellaneous materials produced by Cameron for this exhibit project as well as other research. Of particular note are the notes provided docents in the 1970s, which provide great details about what was on display in the hall at the time.
