Scope and Contents note

The Oakland University Art Gallery records consist of materials produced by the gallery since its founding, with special emphasis on the period from the late 1960s to the 1990s. The Administrative Files series includes correspondence, financial files, correspondence, as well as events and publicity materials. The Exhibits series contains the background materials for the preparation of exhibits and is organized chronologically. The Audiovisual Materials series includes recordings of gallery events and photographs used to prepare exhibits. When possible, they are organized by exhibit title.

History

The first University Art Gallery was located in North Foundation Hall from 1962 to 1966. When Wilson Hall was completed, the Art Gallery moved across from the Meadow Brook Theatre, with Kiichi Usui as its new curator. In January 1967 the first major exhibit opened to the public with paintings and drawings from the Richard Brown Baker Collection, tracing the development of art in New York in the mid-20th century. That same year, G. Mennen Williams gifted 168 works of African sculpture to the Art Gallery - a significant addition to its permanent collections. The sculptures were exhibited in the Gallery in 1968 in presence of Williams.

The Art Gallery is part of the Art and Art History department.
