History

The first student residence halls were built on the Oakland campus in 1961. Anibal (for women) and Fitzgerald (for men) were small houses designed to provide a family-like lifestyle and fulfill the same function as the non-existent Greek societies. As the number of residence halls grew and housing opportunities expanded, a Housing Office was set up, headed by a Director answering to the Dean of Students, to oversee all aspects of on-campus student housing. In the 1980s it was renamed the Office of Residence Halls and in 1997 the Department of University Housing.

Scope and Contents note

The Residence Halls collection includes a variety of materials collected from various sources and originating from the Housing Office and its successors. Covering the 1960s through 1990s, it contains several residence hall manuals that illustrate the evolution of student life in the OU dorms, as wells as policies and memos regarding various aspects of resident student life such as co-ed housing and visitation hours. Of particular note is a 1959 memo on student off-campus housing. The collection also includes some event flyers, housing prospectus, and forms.
