Biographical Note

Billie Elliott DeMont served as Director of Curriculum Development for Urban Affairs (1971-1972) and Dean of Credit Evening Program (1972-1976). At the same time she obtained the title of Assistant Provost in December 1973 and Associate Provost in October 1975.

She was also appointed Director of the Center for General and Career Studies (1976-1980), which offered a Bachelor of General Studies (later renamed Bachelor of Integrative Studies). She proposed this program with working students in mind, offering flexible schedules or programming in the form of evening classes, Saturday classes, off-campus classes, certificates, and continuing education. As director, DeMont had responsibility over five programs: New-Charter College, the credit evening program, the Department of Learning Skills, and the Career Development and Bachelor of General Studies programs.

For more information, see the Center for General and Career Studies records.

DeMont held an Ed D degree from the University of Tennessee. Before OU she was director of Academic Programs Analysis at Wayne State University. She left OU for the University of Maine, Orono and later worked at Indiana University-Purdue and passed away in 1985.

Scope and Contents note

The Billie DeMont papers document the activities and contributions of Billie DeMont in her multiple roles at Oakland University, and primarily at the Center for General and Career Studies between 1974 and 1980. They are arranged in three series: Correspondence, Center for General and Career Studies, and Subject Files.

The Correspondence series includes all of Billie DeMont's administrative correspondence at OU, organized chronologically.

The Center for General and Career Studies series contains the center's general administrative files, such as annual reports and personnel related matters, as well as files specific to its departments (New-Charter College, the Evening program, and the Department of Learning Skills). It also includes program and course proposals grouped by topic.

The Subject Files contain miscellaneous projects or issues Billie DeMont worked on, such as the impact of cable TV on education in Oakland County and a proposal for a medical school at OU.
