History

The Center for Community and Human Development (CCHD) was established in spring 1973 under the leadership of Director Wilma Bledsoe. Its mission was to manage existing relations between university offices and community partners, including the community service program.

For a while the center operated the University Year for ACTION program at Oakland, a federally sponsored student volunteer program designed to assist low-income citizens.During University Year for ACTION, students are trained and placed as full-time or part-time interns in different agencies, to gain practical experience. (see Harvey Hohauser, "University Year for ACTION," VolunteerAdministration (Summer-Fall 1976).

In 1978 the CCHD became independent from the Urban Center Affairs center, under which it had operated since its creation. The center continued to administer grants in to place interns in Oakland and Macomb counties and to offer community service courses. It also set up a cooperative education program, in which students alternated periods of paid employment with classroom work. It helped administer the university's study abroad programs.

In 1981 the CCHD merged into Career Advising and Placement.

Scope and Contents note

The Center for Community and Human Development records contain documents produced by the Center from 1972 to 1981, with the bulk covering the 1978-1981 period. The materials were organized in two small series: Administrative and Topical. The Administrative series includes correspondence and memos from the center's director, faculty, and committees. The Topical series groups all other files by topic in alphabetical order.
