History

Teacher education was one of the four initial program offerings of OU. Under the leadership of its director, Laszlo J. Hetenyi, the program quickly flourished. In a 1961 survey of sophomores, 41% declared their intention to go into teaching. In 1963, 75 students graduated under the program, and in 1963-1964 OU sponsored 134 individuals for their Michigan Teaching Certification.

In May 1965 the School of Education was established as part of the general administrative reorganization of OU into schools. In 1965-1966 graduate degrees were offered for the first time.

Over the years the School of Education has worked with local and international partners to train teachers and improve secondary education, through programs such as the Detroit Teacher Internship Program (1968-1970 – part of the Urban Core program), the Career Opportunities Program with Pontiac (since 1972), the Reading Recovery program (since 1991) and the OU-Guizhou program (since 1986).

The curriculum has expanded quickly, especially graduate programs. In 1974 the early childhood education program combined with the university's child care and toddler centers and a new infant observation laboratory facility into a single early childhood education center -- the Matthew R. Lowry Early Childhood Center. Lowry was an Oakland alumnus and former director of the toddler center. In 1976 the first doctoral program, a Ph.D. in reading education, was approved.

In 1978 the School was renamed the School of Human and Educational Services and in 1991 became the School of Education and Human Services (SEHS).

Scope and Contents

The School of Education and Human Services collection is a composite collection of materials that have been transferred to Archives over time from the School or found in other collections in the archives. It contains administrative files, some research materials, and curricular and program information, including program proposals. It also contains publications by the School and its departments such as brochures, handbooks and newsletters.

Of particular interest are the records of the Short Term Teacher Training Program (1969-1973) and the records of the Detroit Teacher Internship Program (1968-1970), two teacher training projects designed to support local schools and especially disadvantaged communities. Also included are the records of the public school academies, Oakland University’s charter schools.

History

The Oakland University Board of Trustees approved the Public School Academy Chartering Policy in 1995. This was a response to the 1993 Michigan a charter school law.
