History

The School of Performing Arts was created in December 1965, at the same time as the College of Arts and Sciences and other schools were created. It housed the dance, theater and music programs and ran the Academy of Dramatic Art (ADA) from 1967 to 1977. The ADA program was launched as a separate academic unit in 1967 as a curricular counterpart to the professional Meadow Brook Theatre, directed by John Fernald, the renowned former head of England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. . The distinctive program of the academy, and its close relationship to the Meadow Brook Theater and its world class director, provided students with a unique training program. The ADA closed in 1977 along with the School of Performing Arts as the departments of theater and dance were moved to the College of Arts and Sciences.
