This advanced searching tutorial gives some tips on searching full text in Early American Imprints, especially on the use of wildcards (a character substituting for any other character).
Tip: for alternative spellings of search terms, check the Oxford English Dictionary. Its "spellings" tab will give you a list of older spellings and variants of the terms you are searching.
