How to Scan, Print & Save Microcards

Scanning

  • Open the lid of the scanner and place the microcard face down with the header at the bottom.
  • Open GIMP 2.4 by double clicking on the Desktop link.
  • Two toolbars will open. In the one that appears on the left titled GIMP, select File→Acquire→ Scanner Camera
  • In the next box that opens, choose WIA-Epson Perfection 1650 and click Select.

  • In the “What do you want to scan” box that opens, select the radio button for Grayscale Picture and click the link for Adjust the quality of the scanned picture.
  • The Advanced Properties box opens: change the Contrast to 75, adjust the Resolution to 1600 and click OK.

  • Back in the “What do you want to scan” box, click on the Preview button. An image of the whole microcard will appear.
  • If you have already looked at the card using the readers and wish to only scan part of the card, adjust the area to be scanned using the green resizing box. (WARNING! Scanning the whole card is not a quick process; it will take at least 5-7 minutes. Looking at the card ahead of time on the reader is a good idea). When you have the portion of the card you want selected, click Scan.
  • When complete, a window will open with the scanned image of the microcard. You can adjust the zoom using the drop down option in the lower left corner of the window to better view the images (100% is optimal; it will not be crystal clear, but should still be readable).

Printing & Saving

  • On the GIMP toolbar, select the rectangular selection tool (upper left corner). Use the tool to create a box around the “page” desired (click and drag), leaving some white space around the edges.

  • In the top menu bar of the open window of the scanned image, click on Image→Crop to Selection.

  • If you wish to print, select ImagePrint Size, change the width to 8, the height will adjust automatically, and click OK. Then, select FilePrint.

  • If you would like to email the image of the “page” or save it to your flash drive, select FileSave As, give the file a name and save it in folder: desktop. Click on the “+” beside Select File Type and scroll down: select TIFF. Click Save. In the box that opens, leave the compression at “none” and click OK. Right click on the desktop and click Refresh; the icon for the saved file will appear. You can then download it to your flash drive or attach it in an e-mail (files are large, so do not attach more than one or two). Please click on the desktop icon of your saved file and delete it when you are done.
