Distance Education Services

This site serves all Oakland University students and faculty taking or teaching courses away from the main OU campus. The Kresge Library home page is the definitive source for our resources. This site narrows the focus of Kresge's collections to materials that are available electronically, or that can be mailed to our students.

Before You Start

Before you start trying to access library resources, you'll want to activate your library account. See the "How Do I get a library card/library account?" section of the Distance Education Frequently Asked Questions page for information on how to do this.

Finding Books

Use the Library Catalog to locate books in the Kresge Library. You can use the "Limit By" feature on the basic search page to limit your search to books and journals available online.

Finding Articles

Many of our article databases will provide you with a direct link to a full-text resource. We subscribe to dozens of article databases, many of them with full-text coverage. Start your research by using our "Databases by Subject" option on the library Find Articles page. When you come across an item that isn't available online (or that Kresge Library doesn't have at all, even in print), you can place an Interlibrary Loan request and get the item sent to you from another library!

Document Delivery

Distance education students need to register in ILLiad (a service provided by the Interlibrary Loan Department) as either Distance Education Undergraduate Student or Distance Education Graduate Student. Using ILLiad, students can request that materials held at Kresge Library be sent to them using the options under the "Request Books and Articles OWNED by Oakland University" heading . Additionally, materials that are not available at Kresge Library can be acquired and sent to students by using ILLiad and the options provided under the heading "Request Books and Articles NOT OWNED by Oakland University". Please note, however, that any student taking classes on campus may not have items mailed to them. This service is exclusively reserved for distance education students.

Getting Help

Ask one of our reference librarians for help via chat, email or phone! Check out our Ask A Librarian page for information on how to get in touch with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Information for Instructors

E-Reserves: Take advantage of our excellent E-Reserves system. If you email/mail us quizzes, tests, and even articles or chapters (given certain copyright requirements are met) we can put these items up online for you, in adobe acrobat format. In particular, you can leverage our local print collection for your off-site use! See full details on the Kresge Library E-reserve Service. Contact Maurini Strub (248-370-2470 or mrjohn@oakland.edu), the Kresge Library E-Reserve Specialist, if you 'd like to take advantage of our e-reserve system for your class.

Library Instruction: We can host an online or in-person class for you and your students. In such a class, we will show them how to access library resources, as well as free internet resources, that will assist them with research related coursework you may assign them. Contact Beth Kraemer, our head of instruction (more information about our library instruction program), to arrange for an instructional session, or use our online Instruction Request form. Please be sure to include information on where your class meets.
