Direct Links to Articles in Library Databases

Unless otherwise noted here, library database article level URLs for full text documents from our various vendors/platforms can simply be copied and pasted from the Address bar in your browser. Remember that if you want to provide off campus access, you also need to put the proxy prefix in front of this URL on your web page.

FirstSearch:

1. Pull up the full text of the article (in either PDF or HTML format) that you want to make a direct link to.

2. Click on the "Link Pickup " button in the upper right hand corner of the screen

3. Either copy the "IP-address recognition URL for direct article access" or right-click on the "Link Pickup" and copy it.

4. Make sure to Proxy the URL with the proxy prefix (or use the Proxy It Tool) for off campus access.

5. Your done! Mostly. Depending on your version of and settings in Dreamweaver (or other web page WYSIWYG), Dreamweaver may try to "fix" some of the odd characters that occasionally show up in the FirstSearch URL. If you find you've get a FirstSearch error message "Improperly formatted SICI..." when you try to use them, then you'll need to repeat steps 1-3 above, but this time use the "Code View" option in Dreamweaver to find your bad URL, and then replace it with the correct one. This way, Dreamweaver doesn't try to "fix" your URL. If you have problems with this, just let me know.
