Founding Library Director
Oakland University William Beaumont Medical School Library
Rochester, Michigan

Oakland University seeks an experienced, energetic leader to launch a state-of-the-art library to support the innovative curriculum and mission of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWBSM). The new, primarily digital, medical library will be part of the University Library system, benefitting from and contributing to shared collections and collaborative relationships with both the University Library and the Beaumont Hospitals library system. A new building, with space for the medical library, is being planned.

About the Medical School

The OU William Beaumont School of Medicine, a partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Hospitals, will be the first new medical school in Michigan in a generation. The OUWBSM will train physicians to practice with a patient-centered focus, emphasizing wellness and prevention, and the management of acute illness and chronic disease. Its innovative curriculum will emphasize: working in teams of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals; training students to embrace web-based learning and use new technologies in patient care; and promoting applied research. Beaumont Hospitals, the largest, non-university affiliated, post-graduate teaching program in the country, will be the medical school’s exclusive clinical partner and is one of only 20 hospitals nationwide with 10 or more clinical programs listed in U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals. OU is undergoing the accreditation process with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), with plans to welcome the first class in 2010.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with library and medical school administration in the planning and implementation of a library in accordance with LCME standards.
• Communicate a strong vision for the library that reflects the medical school’s commitment to information and digital literacy, collaborative learning models and community outreach.
• Partner with faculty, clinicians and others to integrate the library into the curricula, research and clinical activities of Oakland University and Beaumont Hospitals.
• Provide leadership in the medical library’s information literacy and informatics program, and collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy skills across the curriculum.
• Recruit, lead, supervise and evaluate library staff.
• Develop and administer the library’s budget and engage in strategic planning.
• Formulate policies for the library’s services and develop a core digital and print collection to meet research needs.
• Coordinate resources and services with the University Library and the Beaumont Hospitals library system.
• Represent the library at the university, regional and national levels; engage in statewide consortial partnerships for resource and information sharing purposes.

Required qualifications       

• ALA-accredited MLS degree.
• Substantial and progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing services in a health sciences library.
• Strong commitment to information literacy and to developing in students, faculty and clinicians the informatics skills required to practice evidence-based medicine.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging digital technologies and services in support of medical education, and experience in the design and integration of these technologies into health sciences curricula.
• Experience developing print and digital collections for the health sciences.
• Experience supervising the work of others.
• Budgetary management skills to forecast, develop and analyze financial data.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, written and online communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to work with diverse faculty, staff and students.
• Ability to meet library’s requirements for tenure at the Associate Professor or Professor level, including a record of professional achievement, research/scholarship and service.

 
Desired qualifications

• Experience in an academic library.
• Experience developing facilities, including space design; project management experience.

Rank, salary, benefits: This is a 12-month, tenured academic administrative position that reports to the Dean of the University Library. Appointment will be made at the Associate Professor or Professor level; professional rank and salary will be determined by credentials and experience, with a minimum salary of $95,000.
