SURVEY OF FRENCH LITERATURE

Library Catalog - Finding Books

Library Catalog

To find books about a particular autho, search the author’s name (last name first) as a subject in the Library Catalog, e.g. Moliere .

Generally speaking, books about the author’s life and work will be under the name heading; books of criticism about the author’s works are found under the sub-heading Criticism and interpretation, e.g. Moliere Criticism and interpretation.

Circulating books may be found by call number on the third floor; reference books are found in the second floor, south wing. Book on French literature are classified in the area PQ 1 -- PQ 3999.

Check the bibiographies in relevant books for additional sources of information.

Remember that the Library Catalog also lists ALL the journals we own, electronic AND print versions.

WorldCat

This database gives you access to the collections of thousands of other libraries. We can obtain on interlibrary loan items we lack in our own collections.

Journal Articles - Databases

Besides books about the authors and their works, there is a bounteous supply of literary criticism published in journals on the subject.  Many of these literary journals can be accessed in the following databases:

Humanities Abstracts

Index to journal articles in the humanities. Useful for recently published articles.

Modern Language Association Bibliography

For extensive literary research the essential, the most compendious database (covering literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore). Includes articles, books and book chapers. Check the Library Catalog to see if we own the books; use the GET IT link to see if we own electronic or print copies of the journal articles.

E-Journal Collections

Another good source for journal articles come from two of our e-journal collections.  Besides having full-text articles from the journals that are included, these two collections have their own search engines that are well worth checking directly:

JSTOR

Back runs of essential journals in the humanities and other subject areas; does not include current issues from the most recent 3-5 year period.

Project Muse

Journals in the humanities and social sciences published by Johns Hopkins and other university presses.

RefWorks

Refworks is a resource which allows OU students to maintain a personal database of all of their research materials. You can:

1. create a database of citations

2. use the Cite While You Write feature to insert references while writing your paper, and

3. generate a bibliography in MLA style along with hundreds of different formats.

Set up an account, and then choose the "export" function in the databases you use for records you want to save.
