American Psychological Association sponsored encyclopedia with lengthy article on "Psycholinguistics". Related articles on "Bilingualism," "Sociolinguistics."

B. Periodical index--

PsycInfo-goes back to 1887. Useful to limit searches to "English language" and to "articles." Has online thesaurus of terms-"Subjects". Indexes articles, books, chapters in books, and dissertations.

2. The Linguistics Encyclopedia Ref. P29.L52 2002

Excellent section on "Psycholinguistics" with numerous references to significant researchers.

3. Concise Encyclopedia of Educational Linguistics Ref. P40.8.C66 1999

Arranged in broad subject areas-"The Social Context," "The Individual Learner," "The School Context," etc. Alphabetical listing of topics on p. 797.

4. A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics Ref.P29.C65 1997

Routledge Dictionary of Language and Linguistics Ref. P29.B875 1996

Both good for definitions of terms.

5. Encyclopedia of Language and Education Ref. P40.8.E53 1997

Each of 8 volumes is on a particular theme and is a collection of essays on particular aspects of that theme. Particularly relevant volumes are on "Literacy" (vol.2) and on "Bilingual Education" (vol. 5). Good starting place for topics with important citations.

B. Periodical index--

MLA Bibliography (coverage of psycholinguistics began around 1956). No abstracts but has "enhanced" subject headings. Indexes articles, books, chapters in books.

Medline Medicine is defined quite broadly--many psychology and psychiatry titles are indexed. Abstracts are the lengthiest any place. Useful to limit searches to English language. Has online thesaurus.

Reliable source that gives good overview (with bibliography) of research in "Language Development", "Cognitive Development", "Bilingual Education". 1992 edition not as useful.

2. Literacy in America Ref. LC151.L487 2002

Brief articles on "Psycholinguistics," "Linguistic Approaches to Reading Instruction," "Redundancy," etc.

B. Bibliography--

CHILDES/BIB: An Annotated Bibliography of Child Language and Language Disorders Ref. LB1139.L3A1H54 1991 plus 1994 and 1997 supplements

Arrangement is alphabetical by author, but there is a good subject index. Many of references are to research studies. Online version available (http://hansel.psy.cmu.edu/rmwp)

C. Periodical Indexes--

1. ERIC--great source with a lot of citations to linguistics included. Indexes primarily journal articles and unpublished reports and presentations [ERIC Documents]. Has online thesaurus. Documents online from 1992 on, before on microfiche.

2. Education Abstracts-does not include as many linguistics journals as ERIC but all major education journals are included.

D. Journals--

1. First Language Per. LB1139.L3F57, 1980-2004; online from 1980

2. Reading Teacher Per. LB1573.R28, 1951-present; articles online in WilsonSelect from 10/2000 (a few months behind)

Other Helpful Information

JSTOR--Online collection of many scholarly journals from volume 1 until 2 to 5 years ago. Collection is searchable.

Oxford English Dictionary--Now available online. The OED is a historical dictionary of English, covering the language from the earliest times to the present day and showing the development of meanings through time.

Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science)

This index is most useful in finding out who has cited significant articles.

Boolean Keyword Searching:

"And" requires that all terms must be in your search results. It serves to narrow your search. Dogs and Cats--This means each result will be about both dogs and cats.

"Or" gets you MORE. Use it between similar terms. Dogs or Cats--This means each result will be about either dogs or cats (or possibly even about both dogs and cats).

Sample PsycInfo search:

Does the library have access to a journal online? Easiest way to find out is to check the "Alphabetical List of Online Journals" from the library's "Find Articles" page.

Where do you find lists of databases and other online resources available at OU? The easiest way to find these is to check "Databases by Subject" or "Databases A to Z" from the "Find Articles" page.

Get It

When you are using the library's databases, be sure to click on the blue link when the article you want does not have a full text link in the database. will then take you to the article from another source or take you library catalog record for print holdings or take you to a form to request a copy of the article via interlibrary loan.

Course Reserves--Simply go to the library's web site and click on "course reserves" in the bottom center. This link will then take you to the Library Catalog for print reserves and to the E-Reserves page to find online materials.
