Refworks is a resource which allows OU students to maintain a personal database of all of their research materials. You can create a database of citations, use the Cite While You Write feature to insert references while writing your paper, and generate a bibliography in hundreds of different formats. Set up an account, and then choose the "export" function in the databases you use for records you want to save.
Use the catalog to find books we have in the Kresge Library. Also use the catalog to see if we have access to a particular journal title on-line or in print. You will need to do this when you search public resources like PubMed or PEDro which are not linked to our holdings.
CINAHL Plus with Full-Text - A comprehensive index to nursing and allied health literature, containing links to full-text articles from other databases and e-journal collections.
Cochrane Library - Provides "high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making to base clinical treatment decisions. It also provides other sources of reliable information, from other systematic review abstracts, technology assessments, economic evaluations and individual clinical trials."
Medline - OU's version of the mother of all medical/health databases from the National Library of Medicine (like PubMed, listed below). It includes over 15 million citations for articles back to the 1950's. This version links to all our online full-text journals as well as our other collections. This version of the database is therefore more user-friendly and productive than the public access version.
Sport Discus - This database indexes journals, books proceedings on training, sport, physical fitness, rehabilitation and sport medicine, exercise science and related disciplines.
Web of Science/Science Citation Index - Enormous, comprehensive citation index with abstracts to scholarly journals in the sciences, including medicine. Please log out when you are finished.
Alt-Health Watch - A selective, niche index with full text on alternative health care, with a mix of popular, practitioner, and scholarly sources. Includes full-text articles.
Health Reference Center Academic - A selective index to articles across a wide range of health sciences, with a mix of popular, practitioner, and scholarly sources. Includes full-text articles.
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition - More than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on nursing and related disciplines, as well as abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. This collection is indexed and linked to in CINAHL, above.
PEDro: Physiotherapy Evidence Database - Created by the Centre of Evidence-Based Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, Australia, the database "has been developed to give rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy. Most trials on the database have been rated for quality."
PubMed - The open-access public version of the National Library of Medicine's stupendous index to the biomedical sciences. PubMed does include some small current/specialty databases distinct from the main Medline database. In general, for Oakland University students and faculty it is better to use Medline which is linked to our library's online fulltext and other holdings. PubMed is not.
PubMed Central - The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.
Scirus - The most comprehensive science-specific search engine on the "free" Internet; excludes licensed library databases and content.
