Bibliographic Management Software

Refworks is a resource which allows OU students to maintain a personal database of all of their research materials. You can create a database of citations, use the Cite While You Write feature to insert references while writing your paper, and generate a bibliography in hundreds of different formats. Set up an account, and then choose the "export" function in the databases you use for records you want to save.

Search Strategies

For searching for how one of the Healthy People 2010 10 Leading Health Indicators relates to behavior change, it is advisable to contruct a search strategy with two elements, the health indicator and the behavioral, e.g. obesity and behavior change. To allow for different forms of words, use truncation AKA wildcard symbols, and to allow for different word order (e.g. changing of adverse behaviours) use a combination of truncation and proximity operators. In Medline or PsycInfo, the following search strategy will work:

obes* and behavio?r* n3 chang*.

The different truncation symbols and proximity operators may change based on the database.

Primary Library Databases

Medline - OU's version of the mother of all medical/health databases from the National Library of Medicine (like PubMed, listed below). It includes over 15 million citations for articles back to the 1950's. This version links to all our online full-text journals as well as our other collections. This version of the database is therefore more user-friendly and productive than the public access version.

PsycInfo - The most comprehensive research database for psychology and related disciplines, containing over 2,200,000 records for journal articles, dissertations, books and book chapters. Since human behavior is a major focus of the discipline, this resource is highly relevant for your research.

CINAHL Plus with Full-Text - A comprehensive index to nursing and allied health literature, containing links to full-text articles from other databases and e-journal collections.

Other Useful Resources

Alt-Health Watch - A selective, niche index with full text on alternative health care, with a mix of popular, practitioner, and scholarly sources. Includes full-text articles.

Health Reference Center Academic - A selective index to articles across a wide range of health sciences, with a mix of popular, practitioner, and scholarly sources. Includes full-text articles.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition - More than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on nursing and related disciplines, as well as abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. This collection is indexed and linked to in CINAHL, above.

Sport Discus - This database indexes journals, books proceedings on training, sport, physical fitness, rehabilitation and sport medicine, exercise science and related disciplines.

Library Catalog

Library Catalog

Use the catalog to find what our library owns, in whatever format. Especially, use the catalog to see if we have access to a particular journal title on-line or in print. You will need to do this when you search public resources like PubMed that are not linked to our holdings.

Publicly Available Websites

PubMed - The open-access public version of the National Library of Medicine's stupendous index to the biomedical sciences. PubMed does include some small current/specialty databases distinct from the main Medline database. In general, for Oakland University students and faculty it is better to use Medline which is linked to our library's online fulltext and other holdings. PubMed is not.

PubMed Central - The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

Scirus - The most comprehensive science-specific search engine on the "free" Internet; excludes licensed library databases and content.
