The Center for General and Career Studies was set up in the early 1970s as a place for non-traditional education endeavors. At the time, evening classes, Saturday classes, off-campus classes, certificate programs and continuing education (hence the careers studies), were not part of OU's ethos. However the administration saw them as a way of expanding OU’s educational offerings. The Center also was a place for the Bachelor of General Studies program, Learning Skills (freshman composition classes) and New Charter College.
The Center was an evolving entity that received mixed support from the traditional academic units. Assistant Provost Billie DeMont was appointed as Director of the Center in 1976, with responsibility over five programs: New-Charter College, the credit evening program, the Department of Learning Skills, and the Career Development and Bachelor of General Studies programs.
The records of the Center for General and Career Studies are a composite collection of materials that have been transferred to Archives over time or found in other collections in the archives. It contains administrative files, and other topical files gathered loosely in a Subject Files series.
